Thanks to Mrs. Jackiw, Hickory Bend received a $300.00 grant from the Joliet Local Section of the American Chemistry Society to enhance science curriculum. Mrs. Jackiw's request led to the creation of nearly 200 science projects! All students worked hard at understanding the scientific method and applying it by performing various experiments. Kindergarten and First Grade Classes completed class projects, Second Grade completed small group projects and Third and Fourth Grade students completed individual experiments.
Third and Fourth Grade classes conducted classroom judging to choose the best five projects from each classroom. The Kindergarten, First and Second Grade projects as well as the winning Third and Fourth Grade projects were then displayed in the gym. Three judges from the University of Illinois Extension Service came to Hickory Bend on May 22, 2007 and judged 55 projects. All projects were judged using a rubric that included: hypothesis, procedures/organization, investigation trials, analysis, evaluation/conclusion, visual display and oral presentation. The judges were happy to report that two Fourth Grade students received a PERFECT score on the rubric!
The HB school family was then invited to
view the 55 projects in the gym as well as the other 130 projects
completed by students that were displayed in the library
and cafeteria on the evening of May 22. The evening
viewing, that took place from 6:30 - 7:30 PM, was a huge success
and everyone that attended was amazed by the incredible effort put
forth by HB students. Thank you to the Joliet Local Section
of the American Chemistry Society, the judges from the University
of Illinois Extension Service, Mrs. Jackiw and HB teachers,
students and parents that helped to make Hickory Bend's 1st Science
Fair a huge success.
