This 54.5 inch tower from Mrs. Jackiw's class really did "tower" over her students!

Hickory Bend's 1st Recycling Contest

Students participated in making catalog towers to be recycled.

by Amy Hein

December 18, 2007

Hickory Bend students were challenged from December 4 – December 18 to bring in catalogs and magazines to make a classroom tower.  Students were seen throughout that time bringing in bags of recycling to help their classroom tower grow.  Mrs. Hein went around the building on December 18th and measured each class’ tower.

It was obvious that Hickory Bend families really put forth their best effort to make this contest a success.  In Kindergarten, Mrs. Szotek’s class tower was 46.5 inches tall.  Miss Morris’ second grade tower was 43.5 inches tall.  Mrs. Jackiw’s third grade class built a 54.5 inch tower that literally towered over most of her students.  Fourth graders in Ms. Marnell’s class worked together to create a 48 inch tall tower.

Those were certainly impressive towers, BUT the first graders in Mrs. Lemmon’s class had such a large tower it actually had to be split into three smaller towers!  The total height of Mrs. Lemmon’s class’ tower was 113 inches!  Mrs. Lemmon reported that one particular student, Jack M., and his family really helped to make her classroom successful.  If we could have made one giant tower out of all the catalogs brought in by HB students, it would have been 461 inches tall!  Just imagine a 38.5 foot tower of catalogs!
